Leonard Shlain, a surgeon and author, proposes that visionary artists are the first members of a culture to use image and metaphor to see the world in a new way. These preverbal expressions of novel concepts are then later formulated by physicists. His theory is rooted in brain research and in Jungian archetypal unconscious said to be stored in DNA.
